CHAPTER 3
Atomic illusions
Kehlstein Mountain, Southern Germany, May 13th, 1946
Speer visited the large factory cavern for the first time since its construction debuts a few months back. It was dug directly from the Bavarian Mountains called the Kehlstein, a rocky outcrop that rose above Obersalzberg near the town of Berchtesgaden. The large opening in the rock was also at the base of The Kehlsteinhaus (The Eagle's Nest in English), where Hitler had built his supposed last defense base in case of disaster.
Speer had not chosen the place because of the location of the fabled Hitlerian fortress. Still, more for the same reason, the Nazis had decided to build their hideout there: Strategically, it was probably the last point the Allies would reach if they conquered the entirety of the German Empire.
Since the German nuclear program needed time, the Minister of Armament and Production figured it would get the most of the current location. Maybe a nuclear device and its supposed power could be eventually developed even if the Reich was losing the war and save the day at the last moment.
Being in a mountain also gave some clear advantages to the future Enriched Uranium factory. It would be impervious to Allied bombing.
And so Speer, while keeping his emotions to himself, was truly amazed at the size and eerie look of the place. It was perhaps twenty meters high and was lit like it was day, thanks to the hundreds upon hundreds of lights hanging from its manufactured ceiling. The whole area flashed with the sparks of welders and the noise of machinery working. The factory was taking place, and along with it, the dream of a nuclear Germany.
According to his reports, the USA was very close to delivering their first atomic device, and when they did, he didnât know what would happen for the Reich. If Heisenberg could be believed, it would be the mother of all bombs and destroys several kilometers of anything, and anywhere the Allies would decide to drop it on.
Heâd had more than one night envisioning Berlin burning and erased from the map. Werner Heisenberg, one of the lead scientists for the German nuclear program, walked right up to Speer. âMinister,â said the man respectfully. â I am truly impressed by the size and scope of the facility.â
In the background, several large Opel trucks were just driving in, with large trailers containing the countryâs supply of heavy water. A large crate was in the middle of the large cavern. It had the new and enlarged version of the Haigerloch reactor. âWerner,â said Speer patiently. âI have delivered on my promise. The place will be operational within a week or so. Now you need to deliver on yoursâ.
The German scientist nodded gravely and with all the seriousness in the world. Both men knew that it was a one-in-a-million shot, but it needed to be attempted.
In the background, the other scientists entered the prominent artificial place with dumbfounded looks on their faces. More equipment was gathered outside in a large assembly area protected by camouflage nets to avoid detection from above.
